Biography

Vibrant. Energetic. Breathtaking. Biblical. Humorous. Whole-world art.

Every painting of Dr. He Qi could be a stained-glass window.

Faith Inkubators founder and CCO Rich Melheim stumbled upon the works of Dr. He Qi (pronounced huh’-chee) online and was amazed at his work. The artist is able to capture Biblical scenes in a way that lets the stories tell themselves.

His unique style fits beautifully into our growing world of youth and family focused resources.

FINK was looking for something fresh and unseen for some Lenten resources, so we emailed Dr. Qi to ask him if we could share his work with our Faith Inkubators network. He said yes, and today Dr. Qi is Faith Inkubators’ artist-in-residence while his son, Song Yang, attends Stillwater High School and his wife, Yu Hua, works on translating FINK music into Mandarin.

According to Far Eastern Economic Review, Dr. Qi, a professor at Nanjing Union Theological Seminary” ranks as arguably China’s most internationally sought after contemporary Christian artist." His brilliant, colorful and highly contemporary paintings emerge unmistakably from ongoing Chinese contexts.

He has been committed to the artistic creation of modern Chinese Christian Art since 1983. He hopes to help change the "foreign image" of Christianity in China by using artistic language, and at the same time, to supplement Chinese Art the way Buddhist art did in ancient times. In his works, He Qi has blended together Chinese folk customs and traditional Chinese painting techniques with the western art of the Middle and Modern Ages, and has created an artistic style of color-on-paper painting.

Dr. He Qi was the first among Mainland Chinese to earn Ph.D. in the Religious art after Cultural Revolution. He wrote his dissertation while studying at Hamburg Art Institute in Germany, where he was also able to pursue research in medieval art. His work has been well received overseas: He has exhibited in Kyoto, Hong Kong, Geneva, Hamburg, London, St. Paul, San Francisco, Berkeley and Madison, as well as in mainland China.

His art works has been introduced through media organizations such as: BBC, HK Cable TV, Asian Week, Far Eastern Economic Review, Christianity Today, Upper Room, Augsburg Fortress, Sing Tao Daily News, The World Daily, etc.

While at FINK, He Qi is working on sketching all 120 Bible verses for our "Bible Song Sunday School" project. From here, he moves to Yale Divinity School for the 2005-06 school year to serve as artist-in-residence there. After that, Yale will do a show and publish a book of his works. From there, He hopes to impact both China and America by spreading his works around.
