"Blessed heavens!" thought Fern to herself. "How ever will I be ready for a guest? The place is a mess and the kitchen needs painting and there's not a Christmas cookie in the house!" So off the little mouse ran. She hung a "Do Not Disturb" sign on her door and quickly launched into the task of getting her home in proper order.
But oh, the interruptions! No sooner had she finished the floors and started the baking when

some snoopy neighbor stopped in to collect money for the poor in a distant land which Fern couldn't even pronounce. |
